Distance from Earth: 2,500 light-years
NGC 225, located in the constellation Cassiopeia, lies approximately 2,100 light-years away—a distance that applies to the entire surrounding field of view.
It is an open star cluster, meaning all the stars formed more or less simultaneously from a mass of gas; only a remnant of this gas remains—the diffuse blue area at the center of the image (VdB 4). The cluster is surrounded by dark nebulae composed of gas and dust, some of which are being illuminated by nearby stars belonging to the cluster.
