M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way and is located in the constellation of Andromeda. It is a spiral galaxy similar in structure to our own, with a vast disk of stars, gas and dust.
Visible to the naked eye under dark skies, M31 is approaching the Milky Way and is expected to interact and eventually merge with our galaxy in several billion years.
