The Veil Nebula is the spectacular remnant of a star that exploded approximately 10,000 years ago as a supernova in the constellation of Cygnus. What we see today are the remains of that explosion expanding rapidly through space, forming delicate filaments of hot, glowing gas.
Although it covers an area of the sky several times larger than the full Moon, its light is very faint. Its rippling shapes and intense colours result from the interaction between the shock wave and the interstellar gas, revealing one of the most spectacular examples of a star’s death.
