It is a region of ionized hydrogen located in the constellation of Cygnus and forms part of the same molecular complex as its neighbour NGC 7000 (North America Nebula), being separated from it by dense clouds of interstellar dust.
The intense ultraviolet radiation emitted by young, massive stars ionizes the hydrogen gas, producing the characteristic reddish glow observed in this star-forming region.
